Bedding FAQ

Despite seeming like a relatively straightforward topic, bedding is quite the topic for discussion. In fact, there are a lot of commonly asked bedding questions that very few people know the answer to.

Here are a few bedding FAQs to get you thinking.

What is the difference between a pillowcase and a sham?

Although both are, at face value, covers for pillows, they are designed to serve two different purposes. Pillows are purely functional, providing you with an extra layer to put your face on while you sleep.

Shams, on the other hand, are more for decor purposes, coming in a variety of patterns, colors, and textures. They are almost always removed from the bed before sleeping.

What is the difference between a pillow top and a euro top mattress?

Another great question. Generally, a pillow top mattress has the appearance of a giant blanket that has been laid on top of your bed.

It is, however, sewn onto the mattress top. A euro top sits flat on the mattress and is sewn on all sides, keeping the extra padding layer flush on the mattress.

How long is the lifespan of a down comforter?

In general, down comforters will last 10-15 years. With proper care and careful avoidance of sitting on top of the comforter, however, they can last 15-20 years.

What sizes do pillows come in?

Pillows, like blankets, beds, and box-springs, come in a variety of sizes. They come in standard, king, euro, and boudoir sizes.

What is thread count?

Thread count is the term given to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of a material.

How can I prolong the life of my mattress?

Firstly, invest in a mattress that can be flipped. If it can’t be, be sure to turn it so that you are sleeping on both sides evenly.

Second, you can keep a mattress cover and/or topper on top of the mattress to protect it from staining and wear.

What is the best bed sheet material?

Cotton is generally considered the best bed sheet material. It is soft, breathable, durable, and relatively affordable. In terms of comfort, though, many who can afford high-end sheets will say they prefer the comfort of silk sheets.

What are hypoallergenic sheets?

Hypoallergenic sheets are sheets made from both man-made and natural fibers that do not generally cause allergies. Sme hypoallergenic sheets even repel allergens such as dust mites.

Can I use a duvet cover for my regular comforter?

Yep! Sure can. Duvet covers are designed to protect duvets, so why shouldn’t they be used to protect your favorite comforter?

Are gel pillows safe?

Generally speaking, yes. Keep in mind that all pillows have the potential to cause injury. Gel pillows, though, are no more unsafe than any other pillow.

How can I clean my mattress?

One of the easiest way to clean a soiled mattress is by spot cleaning. This can be done using a cleaner such as bleach or Pine-Sol, dish soap and water, or just warm water. The best treatment depends on the stain.

Choosing the right mattress for your needs

It is a somewhat troubling thought that we are very poor choosers when it comes to mattresses.

Haven’t we all felt very undecided when trying out a new mattress? All mattresses surely feel different, but somehow, the difference seems trivial when trying them out in the shop.

One reason for that may be that we need a lot of time to evaluate a mattress. Picking one in a couple of minutes after an awkward try out is probably not going to be the best choice ever.

My friend, Monetta, is a chiropractor from Henderson, Nevada and she has told me some nightmare stories from some of her patients who now suffer with chronic pain because of a poor choice in mattress.
